Last year, the F.D.A. approved Epidiolex, a purified CBD extract, to treat rare seizure disorders in patients 2 years or older after three randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled clinical trials with 516 patients that showed the drug, taken along with other medications, helped to reduce seizures. These types of studies are the gold standard in medicine, in which participants are divided by chance, and neither the subject nor the investigator knows which group is taking the placebo or the medication.

In addition to the multi-stage clinical trials of Epidiolex, a 2019 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Molecules carried out clinical trials on the use of CBD for other epileptic conditions.
One of the most commonly cited studies regarding CBD use for anxiety was published in The Permanente Journal back in January 2019. The study observed the prevalence of anxiety and the quality of sleep among 103 adults. In the first month of data collection, 79% of patients that used cannabidiol showed decreased anxiety scores. More importantly, the scores remained low for the entirety of the study.
