What steps come before winterization?
So wait, even though the oil is CO2 extracted, it will still contain alcohol?
Nope! The alcohol is just used to thin the CBD oil in order to properly filter it. Once it’s been filtered and the undesirable elements have been removed, it’s time to remove the alcohol. This is done with a piece of equipment called a rotary evaporator (rotovap).
There are many steps to processing hemp into a consumer level product. One of the most critical, in terms of making a clean product, is winterization. No, this isn’t what your dad does to the lawn mower every fall. Winterization is a process that removes undesirable elements extracted from hemp, for example, fats, waxes and lipids. Without winterization these elements cause the final product to be cloudy, darker and have an unpleasant taste.
The winterization process starts with raw extract straight from our CO2 machine (see photo below). This crude oil contains all the essential parts of the hemp plant except for the actual plant material itself. CBD, minor cannabinoids, terpenes, fats, waxes, and lipids are all part of this viscous liquid. Crude oil extracted from a CO2 machine will have an attractive, light color to it, especially compared to alcohol extracted oil, which will have a dark, sludge-like appearance.
How does winterization work?
In order to create CBD isolate e-liquids, the winterised hemp oil is added to VG and PG. This can be left flavour free as an additive for your favourite non-CBD vape juice. Alternatively, it can be flavoured using quality e-liquid flavourings; or, in the case of our terpenes ranges, proprietary cannabis terpene blends can be added back into the e liquid to enhance the flavour and to replicate the ‘entourage effect’ that terpenes have on cannabinoids.
During CO2 extraction, the hemp is submitted to low temperatures and high pressure. It is quite a complex process; however, because it eliminates the need for chemicals, it is by far the safest and cleanest way to obtain pure cannabinoids.

If this information has concerned you, but still want to get the benefits that vaping CBD offers, that’s where winterised CBD oil e-liquids come into play.
Currently the school of thought is that this likely only a concern for extremely frequent CBD vapers; even then there is no proof that it actually happens. Vaping CBD is still in its infancy – it’s showing amazing benefits thus far; however, on the flip side, we still need more research into potential risks.
After the CO2 extraction process is complete, the end result is a hemp oil concentrate which contains all the lovely phytonutrients that hemp possesses.
Live Well CBD WINTERISED Cannabis Extract & Hemp Seed Oil Moka Flavour
Winterised Live Well CBD:
Winterisation of the raw paste includes dissolution in alcohol and subzero temperatures to separate the solids from the liquids.
This process results in a dark oil containing all of the cannabinoids which is mixed with a carrier oil (VIRGIN HEMP OIL) and a Mocha flavouring to give us the winterised oral version of the original product.
